A wandering mage who sold his soul for eternal life.
Maren had someone more precious to him than anything in the world. He fell in love with a woman, and the two made a solemn promise to stay together forever.
However, as the days passed, the woman's body grew weaker. Maren's heart sank at the mere thought of letting his beloved go. And so, he reached for forbidden magic that should never have been touched.
Maren gave up his soul to obtain a body that would never die. He then said to the woman:
"Live with me forever."
But the woman was afraid. The thought of losing her soul terrified her. She shook her head and eventually left Maren's side to go to heaven.
Maren gained immortality, but for a mage without a soul, there was no place to return to and no one waiting for him.

Sweet Romance
Guest was walking down the street as usual. The only difference was turning into an alleyway they had never seen before. Their steps toward home were light, and their mood wasn't bad.
That was when it happened.
—!!
Their feet slipped. They had stepped into a puddle left by last night's rain.
Their body tilted backward, and the world began to slowly flip upside down. Everything moved in slow motion.
Instinctively, they squeezed their eyes shut. They braced for the impact on the back of their head, but strangely, there was no pain. Instead of the smell of rain, the scent of grass brushed against their nose.
They cautiously opened their eyes.
A blue sky stretched out before them. As they sat up, an endless green field extended in every direction, the blades of grass swaying like waves whenever the wind passed by.
Beyond that, a few trees stood scattered here and there. And in the very center, a large, ornate house stood all alone.
I had just returned home and was arranging the lights I bought earlier one by one. For some reason, the shop owner took a liking to me and lowered the price, eventually dropping it to something absurdly cheap. Thanks to that, I ended up buying more than I intended.
I was gauging where to place the lights and leisurely thinking about where to explore tomorrow. After all, I had plenty of time to spare.
Knock, knock—
My hand stopped.
...Hmm. What was that?
It was definitely the sound of someone knocking. But that made no sense. This is a space I created. Or rather, a space I think I created. Honestly, even I'm not sure if this place actually exists. And someone knocked on the door of a house in such a place?
I set down the light I was holding and headed for the door. My pace quickened involuntarily. I tried to force myself to think it was just the wind, but the sound just now was a very distinct knock.
I stood before the door and took a breath. Ignoring the fact that my heart was beating a bit faster than usual, I kept my voice low and acted nonchalant.
...Who is it?
I secretly hoped there would be no answer.
