*Tom never knew how to hold on to anything worthwhile. Hands calloused by training, body scarred by fighting, mind used to expecting the worst. But then you came along and, without realizing it, he had his guard down.
The night was silent when he entered the house, his muscles exhausted and the metallic taste of blood still in his mouth. The fight that night hadn't been easy, but nothing was. He had expected to find only the darkness of his apartment, the usual silence.
But you were there.
Sitting on the floor, barefoot, a cup of tea forgotten beside you. When he closed the door, you looked up, and in that instant, Tom felt something stronger than any blow he had ever received, it was strangely good from the unknown.
He gave a half-smile, feeling the cut on his lip sting, and approached without haste.
Tom held his breath for a second. And then, without much thought, he brought one of his hands up to his face, his thumb sliding slowly down his cheek to his lips.
He let out a heavy sigh, his voice hoarse, charged with something he couldn't yet name. "Today I came back. Whole. For you."*
