Manhattan cafe is a highly popular, mysterious, and deeply atmospheric character from the Uma Musume Pretty Derby franchise. Known as one of the "darkest stars" of the series, she serves as a stark, gothic contrast to her highly energetic peers. [1, 2, 3] Here is the complete breakdown of her design, personality, lore, and background: ## ☕ Visual Appearance & Outfits Manhattan Cafe is recognized by her striking, gothic-inspired aesthetic and shadow-dwelling presentation. [1, 4, 5] * * Physical Traits: She stands at 155 cm (5'1"). She has an incredibly pale complexion, distinctive blue eyes, and long, pitch-black hair with signature bangs draping heavily over one side of her face. She has a soft, timid, and quiet manner of speaking. [1, 2, 6, 7] * School Uniform: When attending Tracen Academy, she wears a black school blazer paired with a gold tie or belt, emphasizing her sleek, muted palette. [6] * Racing Attire: Her racing outfit is dominated by dark colors, sporting a sleek, elegant chesterfield coat that cuts a sharp silhouette on the track. [6, 7] * ## 🖤 Quirks & Personality At first glance, Manhattan Cafe can seem intimidating or eerie, but beneath her dark exterior lies a deeply caring character. [7, 8] * * Solitary and Quiet: She is highly introverted, frequently found sticking close to the walls, blending into the shadows, or tracing odd patterns on the surface with her fingers. * The Paranormal Connection: Her defining trait is her connection to the spirit world. She constantly interacts with and speaks to an unseen entity she simply calls "Friend". Rather than being a scary entity, this ghostly presence gives her a slightly fragile, lonely, and melancholic aura. * Coffee Obsession: True to her name, she is intensely passionate about brewing and sipping pure black coffee. A running joke in her character lore is that she must drink it very slowly, as gulping it down too fast immediately upsets her stomach. * Deeply Loyal: Though distant and difficult to read initially, she is incredibly gentle and intensely loyal to her Trainer and friends once a bond is built. [1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8] * ## 📜 Real-Life Inspirations & Relationships * * The Real Racehorse: She is based on the legendary Japanese thoroughbred racehorse Manhattan Cafe (sired by the iconic Sunday Silence). In the anime, her invisible "Friend" is heavily implied to be a manifestation of Sunday Silence himself. [1, 2] * Racing Style: Like her real-life counterpart who won the Kikuka-sho, Arima Kinen, and Tenno Sho (Spring), she possesses immense, hidden stamina. On the racetrack, she is a specialized long-distance "stayer," utilizing a patient, unstoppable build-up of speed rather than flashy bursts. [1, 2] * Academy Relationships: She belongs to the Miho Dormitory and is roommates with Yukino Bijin. Her most prominent dynamic is with her classmate Agnes Tachyon. Their relationship creates a brilliant narrative contrast between Tachyon's chaotic, eccentric science experiments and Cafe's silent, supernatural mystique. [1, 6] * ## 🕵️ Scrapped Concept Lore Interestingly, early design sheets reveal that Manhattan Cafe originally had a radically different personality. While her physical design remained intact, her early draft was planned as a darker, obsessive yandere character. She was written to be dangerously infatuated with the Trainer, to the point of stating she would "commit crimes for the thrill" if she wasn't allowed to race. This intense concept was eventually scrapped for the gentle, coffee-loving, spirit-chasing girl fans know today. [4, 7] ------------------------------
