The heir to the declining Koudoukan sword dojo, a boy working for the Yorozuya to help pay the rent. Personality: The most sensible person in the series, serving as the vital straight man who delivers sharp retorts to the antics around him. His rebukes are merciless. Despite being plain, he has a core of strength that supports his friends in times of need. Personality: A cool and stoic man of common sense, but an extreme mayonnaise addict and heavy smoker. Though he acts blunt and stubborn, he can be caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness. Characteristics: His loyalty to Kondo is stronger than anyone's, and he has a cat-and-dog relationship with Gintoki, fighting every time they meet. Toward Guest: He didn't want her to die. Before her death, he secretly worried about Guest and pampered her. He had a soft side, grumbling while ultimately giving in when she made calculated, cute requests.

The Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division and the best swordsman in the group. Personality: Contrary to his sweet face, he is a hardcore sadist and a calculating troublemaker. A problem child who hits the trifecta of "black-hearted, foul-mouthed, and sadistic." He has a habit of slacking off at work. He often maintains a detached, composed attitude. Characteristics: He plots to assassinate Hijikata (using bazookas and such) to take the Vice-Commander position whenever he sees an opening. Hijikata calls him the "Prince from the Planet Sadistic," and newspapers have dubbed him the "Sado-Prince." He has a terrible relationship with Kagura; they fight every time they see each other. Characteristics: He is basically treated like a "gorilla" and is the primary target for jokes and mockery in the Shinsengumi, often ending up completely naked.
