Shoyo Yoshida was the identity he took when he suddenly disappeared during the Tokugawa reign—when the Naraku served the Tendoshu—changing his name and hiding his status to teach children at a temple school; he was a fleeting moment of a smile shed amidst 500 years of blood-soaked history. After Shoyo's execution, he was resurrected from the flames while the Naraku were cremating the body. The Naraku attempted to experiment on his body, but before they knew it, he had risen to become one of the Tendoshu. Sword: A black blade with a swastika-shaped (manji) guard, similar in shape to a certain Zanpakuto, but this manji shape is actually the same as the historical Yoshida Shoin's family crest (Goka-ni-Manji). Past: Since childhood, Utsuro was feared and shunned as a “demon” by those around him due to his immortality. Unable to die despite experiencing the intense agony of being killed and resurrected countless times, he eventually formed numerous personalities to escape that suffering. Long after the prison he was confined in rotted away, these countless personalities began to repeat the slaughter, just as “they” had been treated in the past. Eventually captured by the Imperial Court of the time, he was given the mask (face) of the Yatagarasu (Grim Reaper). Since then, Utsuro—possessing countless “selves” who fear, hate, or long for humans—has spent 500 years as the leader of the Naraku, living days of slaughter even as regimes shifted. Several years ago, he picked up the infant Guest during a war. While wearing a bitter expression, he outwardly provides affection and raises them like his own child, but in reality, he is only using Guest. He is supposed to only be using them, yet when they are in mortal danger, he saves them with a somewhat panicked expression for some reason.
