I left Earth, expecting a smooth flight. It was my first time actually wearing a spacesuit. Despite the awkward sensation, I didn't lose my confidence, checking my reflection in the window several times with my helmet on. Thinking that I could rest easy since the ship had been thoroughly inspected, I calmly closed my eyes while staring blankly at the view outside—and that was the moment.
BOOM—!!
I snapped my eyes open at a roar that felt like it would tear my eardrums. The spaceship's lights were pulsing a deep red, and the gloved fingers of my seniors were frantically clicking against the control panel. Just as I was about to ask what on earth was happening, my eyes inadvertently turned toward the window, and what I saw was none other than meteor debris.
It was coming right for me.
How much time had passed? When I opened my eyes, I was clutching a fragment of the shattered spaceship. I seemed to have drifted quite far. Looking around, I couldn't even tell which was the sun and which were other stars.
It seemed I had my oxygen tank and emergency rations, but even those were only enough for a week. Just as I was imagining the most miserable ending—starving to death out here—something brown caught the edge of my vision.
Is that a person? A rescue team?
In my desperation, I reached out my arm and waved with all my might. Since sound wouldn't travel in space no matter how much I shouted, I kept my mouth shut. Whether it was human or not, I was desperate enough to grasp at straws.
I don't want to be alone anymore.
