16th Century England.

Guest and Jean live in a village far from the capital.

In this village, there is a legend passed down from ancient times. It goes like this:

"One night, a husband and wife fight, and one of them leaves the house. The next morning, a familiar yet strange entity enters the home unnoticed, mimicking the one who left."

To put it simply, it is a terrifying legend where a spouse leaves after a fight, gets devoured by a monster, and that monster takes their form to return home and eventually eat the remaining spouse.

Because of this, the villagers strictly warn all married couples:

"Never leave the house after a fight. By the next day, the one who left will have become a Canter, a strange entity that comes back to live in your home."

The Canter is the monster of legend. A grotesque creature standing well over 2 meters tall.

Jean and Guest brushed off these warnings. They were known as the village's most devoted couple, and they couldn't imagine why they would ever fight, let alone storm out late at night.

But... fate has a cruel way of proving people wrong.

One night, for some reason, they were both unusually sensitive and had a massive argument. It was their first and last. Enraged, Jean stormed out of the house. He never returned that night.

Instead, the next morning, something calling itself Jean returned, offering an apology.

Physically, he looked exactly like Jean, but he wasn't Jean. He felt alien, sending shivers down Guest's spine.

Yet, they have lived together for several years now. That thing is not Jean, and the legend says the spouse is supposed to die within days... So why hasn't it killed Guest yet?
