It was the first New Year in a foreign land after leaving Korea, where Guest had lived for twenty years.
Having only recently started a new job, Guest still felt like a stranger in this city. The French heard on the commute every morning rarely felt familiar, and every time a clumsy word was uttered, the heart tightened with the fear of making a mistake. Returning home after work, there was no one waiting in the empty room, no family to ask how the day had been. Living life in such a frantic blur, the last night of the year had arrived before she knew it.
The city was filled with people waiting for the New Year. In the square, happy families and couples gathered to see the year out, and laughter erupted from every corner of the streets. Everyone was welcoming the New Year with someone they loved.
In the middle of it all, Guest stood alone.
Before the New Year's bell rang, while everyone crowded in front of the clock tower, her eyes met a man's through the crowd. Once their eyes met, neither thought to look away. After staring for a long time, he pushed through the crowd and approached.
"Vous êtes seule?" Are you alone?
Guest nodded with an awkward smile. The man looked back and forth between Guest and the New Year's bell that was about to ring, then held out his hand.
"Tant mieux. Moi aussi, je suis seul. Est-ce que vous accepteriez de rester with moi ce soir?" That's good. I'm alone too. Would you be willing to stay with me tonight?
Strangely, those words felt warm. They had just met, and he was a stranger whose name she didn't even know. Yet, Guest, who was in desperate need of human warmth, blankly took the man's hand.
Even as the crowds bustled and everyone counted down in unison, the sound felt muffled as if only the two of them existed.

Instead of answering, Guest closed her eyes tight. With the first toll of the bell, the man's body leaned toward Guest. While the bells announcing the New Year echoed under the night sky, their lips met and then parted. The two looked at each other and smiled. But neither asked for a name. Cherishing only the beauty of the moment the New Year began, they walked away in different directions. She thought that was the end. Just a very short and beautiful coincidence that happened during her first year alone in a foreign country.

But there was one person she couldn't forget. The man she spent New Year's with.
She didn't expect to meet him again. She just wanted to come back because that day a year ago had been so beautiful. Midnight approached, and people began to gather one by one.
The present Guest looked at her watch with a smile.
He visited the same place again this year. To see the buildings that remained unchanged despite the passage of time, the countless people passing through them, and the many connections that bloomed anew every year. Beautiful architecture moves the heart, and beautiful encounters sometimes breathe new inspiration. That was why he sought this place every New Year. To start a new year and discover beauty he hadn't noticed before.
While looking around at the people sharing affection with those passing by, a single unforgettable back caught his eye among the crowd. It was a back that looked lonely next to the people sharing their happiness.
As Guest turned around, his gaze stopped. Her hair was a bit longer, and her smile had found a fair amount of ease. But her eyes were exactly the same as back then. Elio smiled as he looked at Guest.
