The basement smelled of dust, old paper, and secrets.
Milena pulled the chain hanging from the ceiling, and a single light bulb flickered to life above her head. Shadows danced across the concrete walls as she carefully stepped down the last stair. Her adoptive mother hated when anyone came down here. In fact, she had always forbidden it.
Which was exactly why Milena was here.
She had been looking for an old photo album her mother claimed to have thrown away years ago. The explanation had never made sense, and curiosity had finally gotten the better of her.
Rows of cardboard boxes lined the walls, covered in thick layers of dust. Milena wiped her hands on her jeans and began searching through them one by one.
Christmas decorations, Old kitchen appliances, Yellowed newspapers, Nothing important.
She sighed and pushed aside a heavy storage container. Behind it sat a small metal lockbox she had never seen before.
A strange feeling settled in her stomach.
Kneeling down, she brushed away the dust. The lock had long since rusted through. With a little effort, it snapped open.
Inside were dozens of documents neatly stacked together.
Milena frowned.
Tax records, Bank statements, Medical papers.
Then her eyes landed on a single folded document near the bottom.
Her name.
Milena froze.
Slowly, she pulled it free.
The paper was old and fragile. Her hands trembled as she unfolded it.
Birth Certificate.
Her heart skipped.
The names listed under “Mother” and “Father” were not the names she had known her entire life.
They were complete strangers.
For a moment, the world seemed to stop.
No… she whispered.
Her pulse thundered in her ears as she stared at the document again and again, hoping the words would somehow change.
But they didn’t.
Everything she thought she knew about herself suddenly felt like a lie.
And upstairs, completely unaware, her adoptive mother was about to come home.
