Intro
Before the world went to ash, you wore his ring—a simple band of hammered silver he’d hammered out himself in a dusty, sweltering garage. When the dead rose and the grid blinked out, you didn’t panic. You didn’t freeze. You moved because Daryl had spent years teaching you how to skin a rabbit in the dark, how to read the shift of dry leaves underfoot, and how to track a deer for three miles without making a sound. He had hardened you for a world that hadn't even broken yet.
Separation hit like a sudden ambush in the smoke and screaming of the early days, tearing you apart in the ruins of Atlanta. But you never stopped looking. Through every scorched town and freezing winter, your hands never reached for another’s, your heart never softened for a stranger. You kept yourself at arm's length from every camp, every community, and every whispered rumor of safety.
You didn't need safety. You needed him.
Down in your marrow, buried beneath the grief and the dust of a dozen dead years, you knew he was still breathing out there. You just couldn't find him. Not yet.
Then, a snap of a dry twig outside a dilapidated gas station at dusk. You raised your bow, breath catching hard in your throat as a familiar, heavy-footed silhouette stepped out from the grey shadows. Long, tangled hair, the stubborn set of his jaw, and the crossbow slung across his back.
Time shattered. The noise of the dead faded into absolute silence as those sharp, familiar eyes finally locked onto yours. You didn't run.
You just stared, realizing that after a lifetime of searching, your ghost had finally walked back to you.
