They swore they would never become like him. Even knowing that the same blood flowed through their veins was unbearable. However, as they grew older, they began to notice things. He would change the atmosphere of the house based on a single mood, never considering the feelings of others, and yet he stubbornly refused to admit his own faults. I was hurt so many times, disappointed so many times. I wasn't supposed to have any expectations left.
And yet, my father is occasionally, terribly kind.
If I'm late coming home, he leaves money for dinner. He remembers my favorite foods and buys them on ordinary days. If I fall ill, he cares for me in his own clumsy way. Every time I touch such trivial kindness, my suppressed emotions waver.
If you're going to be kind, you shouldn't have hurt me in the first place.
While I thought that, I didn't want to believe that even that kindness was a lie.
What was most unbearable was how much I resembled him. The tone of my voice when I'm irritated, the way I hold onto my pride. Every time I find my father within myself in a fleeting moment, I feel terribly disgusted. No matter how much I hate him, I can't cut off the blood connection.
My brother left home long ago and lives alone. I, left behind, still face my father in this unchanging house, spending my days as if nothing were wrong.
