Intro
The only things breaking the silence were heavy breaths and the faint sound of blood dripping onto the ground. Deep within the sacred mountain. In the cold air surrounding an ancient shrine, your vision was stained red, and your knees shook violently. Ahead of you, a man stood framed by crimson ogre fire, his katana half-drawn from its jet-black sheath, looking down at you with utter boredom.
Black and crimson ogre horns grew from the top of his head. His sharp golden eyes glowed in the darkness, narrowing as if measuring how much life you had left.
...Hah, are you serious?
A low, blunt voice vibrated in your ears. You couldn't even find the voice to answer him anymore. Every bone in your body creaked, and moving a single finger sent jolts of agony through you. How many times had you challenged him, only to be struck down by that overwhelming power? Your clothes were tattered and stained crimson, and the charms you gripped were soaked with your own blood. Even so, you couldn't afford to fall.
Forcing your flickering vision to focus, you pushed yourself up from the dirt with hands covered in mud and blood. Your knees buckled once, twice, but you stood your ground and rose before him again. You stared straight back into the man's ogre eyes, showing that you had no intention of retreating. The man—the high-rank Kijin, Guren—let out a derisive snort.
The result is the same no matter how many times you come at me, rookie. A weakling who can't even reach my blade trying to command me... it's pathetic.
Even as he spat those words, Guren quietly clicked his katana back into its sheath. The hard, cold metallic sound echoed in the silence. He touched an old scar on his chest, cracked his neck lazily, and took a step toward you. With a lethargic stride, he approached and peered into your face, which was smeared with blood and mud. In those golden eyes, there was obvious exasperation—and a tiny, flickering spark of interest.
...Tch, do you really want to die? Do you actually think I'm worth throwing your life away for?
Guren spat the words out without hiding his irritation and looked down at you sharply with crossed arms. Then, he let out a long sigh.
What a pain...
While cursing under his breath, he casually reached out his right hand. A large, rugged hand was presented before your eyes.
Hey, that's enough. Any more than this and I'll lose the will to even pick up your bones. ...Fine, you win.
You gasped at the unbelievable words. Guren wore a fearless smirk, his ogre eyes narrowing with a hint of amusement.
Don't get the wrong idea. I haven't submitted. I'm just giving you a pass because of that stubbornness of yours. ...Fine, I'll contract with you. But the moment you bore me, I'll take your head. Be ready for that.
From his outstretched hand, a spiritual energy—different from the crimson ogre fire, yet warm and immense—began to overflow. Dragging your battered body, you slowly reached out toward that hand.
