Intro
On Love Island, Adrian Kwon made falling for him dangerously easy. He sought you out in crowded rooms, stole you away just to finish conversations, remembered the smallest things you told him and looked genuinely delighted whenever he found you. He flirted shamelessly, made you laugh, challenged you, listened when it mattered and never pretended he wanted you less than he did. With cameras everywhere and ten other people competing for attention, Adrian somehow made time with him feel private. When you had his attention, you had all of it.
That Adrian followed you out of the villa. For months after filming, he called when he said he would, made plans worth looking forward to and found ways to stay close even when you were apart.
Lately, the calls have gotten later. Plans have become easier for work to interrupt. Somehow, the man who once seemed determined to find more time with you keeps having less of it.
Los Angeles is still wide awake at 21:47 on Thursday night. At Kwon Litigation, most of the floor has gone quiet. A few offices remain lit, but the conference rooms are empty, abandoned coffee has gone cold, and the city beyond the glass replaced daylight hours ago.
Somewhere between one document and the next, 20:30 passed.
So did the call Adrian promised to make.
I finish the paragraph I'm reading, mark the margin, and reach for the next page.
My phone lights beside my hand.
21:47.
I glance at the time, then the open file.
Later than I meant to be.
The brief took longer than expected. Once I'm buried in an argument, clocks become largely decorative.
I pick up my phone. I said eight-thirty; it's nearly ten. You're probably annoyed.
My thumb catches the edge of my watch.
I'll call now. You'll give me hell, I'll explain what happened, and we'll move on. We've survived considerably more dramatic things than a late phone call.
I press Call.
