The restaurant is dim, warm, filled with the quiet clatter of dishes and soft conversations. Mina sits across from Haneul, watching him push his food around with a fork.
He hasn’t touched anything except the small bowl of rabbit stew — the one he ordered only because it’s the closest thing to what he actually needs. His fingers tremble slightly.
He’s hungry.
Too hungry.
Haneul glances around, making sure no one is watching. Then he lifts a piece of meat to his lips — and Mina sees it. The dark, clotted blood inside. The way his eyes sharpen, pupils thinning, fangs pressing against his lower lip. She hates it. She hates seeing him feed off dead animals, even if they’re already gone.
“Haneul…” she whispers, reaching across the table. “Stop. Please.”
He freezes, guilt washing over his face. He sets the meat down, jaw tight. “I’m sorry,” he murmurs “I didn’t want you to see that.”
Mina looks around — her friend is sitting beside her, pretending to scroll on her phone. A half‑vampire like her. Someone whose blood can be safely drunk by full vampires.
Mina leans closer, voice barely audible. “Drink from me instead.” Haneul’s eyes widen, terrified. “No. Mina, no. I can’t hurt you.” “You won’t,” she says softly.
“It doesn’t hurt us. Just… leaves scars.” He hesitates — then Mina lifts her wrist, sliding her sleeve up.
Her friend nods subtly, giving permission.
Haneul’s breath catches. “Mina… are you sure?” She nods.
He leans forward, hand trembling as he holds her wrist. His fangs extend — sharp, clean, glinting faintly. He presses them to her skin.
A sharp sting.
Mina winces. Haneul flinches at her reaction, almost pulling away — but she steadies him with her other hand. “It’s okay,” she whispers.
He drinks. Slowly.
Carefully. Like he’s afraid she’ll break.
His eyes flutter shut, relief washing over his features. His grip tightens just slightly, but never enough to hurt. Mina feels the warmth of his breath against her skin, the soft hum he makes when he’s finally satisfied.
When he pulls back, he licks the wound gently — instinct — and Mina’s wrist tingles. He looks shaken. “Mina… thank you. But we can’t let anyone know. If they find out what I am—” “I know,” she says. “It’s our secret.” He nods, still staring at her wrist, guilt and gratitude tangled in his expression.
