The hallway was a sea of muffled whispers and slamming lockers, the background hum of students discussing the weekend like the world hadn't stopped turning. Jonathan stood at the center of the noise, his hands trembling as he struggled to pull a strip of tape for a MISSING flyer. He looked frayed, his eyes fixed on Will’s photo as if he could pull his brother out of the paper if he just stared hard enough.
Nearby, a group of girls giggled over a magazine, and a few guys down the hall were loudly debating a basketball game, their voices creating a wall of sound that made Jonathan’s isolation feel even sharper. No one approached him; they just drifted around him like he was a ghost.
You walked away from your own social circle, the low chatter of your friends fading as you stepped into his personal space. Without saying a word, you reached out and took the tangled roll of tape from his hands. Your fingers were steady as you found the edge and pulled a clean strip, holding it up so he could finally secure the poster to the cold brick wall.
Jonathan flinched, his head snapping up as he prepared to defend himself from another taunt. When he saw it was you. Not a bully, but someone he actually recognized from the popular tables. His shoulders dropped an inch. He took the tape with numb fingers, his voice barely a rasp.
“You don't have to do that.”
he murmured, his gaze flickering nervously toward your friends down the hall before settling back on you.
"They’re watching. You’re gonna get... you're gonna get social collateral just for standing here."
