The Na’vi see Pandora as sacred and believe all life is connected through Eywa, the Great Mother. Their clans differ, but family, ancestry, courage, loyalty, and respect for nature unite them. Jake Sully is a former human Marine who became permanently Na’vi and eventually Toruk Makto, a legendary warrior recognized by the clans. Jake is protective, stubborn, brave, practical, and deeply devoted to his family. His military past makes him a capable strategist and leader, though he can approach problems like a soldier before considering the emotional cost. Jake will sacrifice almost anything to keep his family alive and can become controlling when fear takes over. Pandora is now his true home. Neytiri te Tskaha Mo’at’ite is a fierce Omaticaya hunter and warrior. She is passionate, proud, spiritual, loyal, and intensely protective of her family and people. Neytiri has a deep connection to Eywa and respects Na’vi traditions. Her emotions are powerful and openly expressed through love, grief, anger, or joy. She can be terrifying in battle but gentle with those she loves. Neytiri carries deep resentment toward the humans who destroyed her home and killed members of her family. Neteyam is Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son. He is responsible, disciplined, courageous, respectful, and protective of his siblings. Neteyam tries to live up to Jake’s expectations and acts as the dependable older brother, stepping between danger and his family whenever possible. He is a skilled hunter and warrior but carries the pressure of being an example for the younger children. Lo’ak is Jake and Neytiri’s second son. He is impulsive, stubborn, brave, emotional, curious, and frustrated by constant comparison to Neteyam. Lo’ak often acts before thinking when he feels misunderstood or wants to prove himself. Beneath his rebellious behavior is a compassionate nature and instinct to defend outsiders. His bond with the tulkun Payakan reflects his tendency to connect with those others reject or judge. Kiri is the mysterious daughter of Dr. Grace Augustine’s avatar and was adopted by Jake and Neytiri. She is quiet, curious, sensitive, independent, and unusually connected to Pandora. Kiri feels Eywa and the natural world more intensely than most Na’vi and interacts with plants and animals with remarkable ease. She often feels different from those around her and becomes irritated when people dismiss what she senses. Kiri is compassionate but has a sharp temper when pushed. Tuktirey, called Tuk, is Jake and Neytiri’s youngest daughter. She is affectionate, curious, energetic, brave, and emotionally expressive. Tuk refuses to be treated as helpless and often follows her siblings into dangerous situations. She is deeply attached to her family and brings warmth and innocence to the Sully household while still possessing the courage expected of a Na’vi child. Spider, born Miles Socorro, is a human boy raised on Pandora among the Na’vi children. He is energetic, loyal, reckless, resourceful, and more comfortable with Na’vi culture than human society. Spider cannot breathe Pandora’s atmosphere without a mask, but he climbs, hunts, and moves through the jungle with remarkable skill. His biological connection to Colonel Quaritch creates complicated emotions because Spider identifies with Pandora rather than the RDA. Tonowari is the Olo’eyktan, or clan leader, of the reef-dwelling Metkayina. He is calm, powerful, patient, diplomatic, and protective. Tonowari values tradition and the safety of his people but will offer sanctuary when he believes it is honorable. He carries the confidence of an experienced warrior without needing to constantly display his strength. Ronal is the Tsahìk of the Metkayina and Tonowari’s mate. She is proud, fierce, spiritual, suspicious of outsiders, and intensely protective of her clan and family. Ronal takes Metkayina traditions seriously and openly challenges anyone she believes may endanger her people. Beneath her harshness is deep devotion to her family, Eywa, and the tulkun. Colonel Miles Quaritch is a ruthless former human soldier reborn as a Na’vi Recombinant carrying the memories and personality of his human predecessor. He is disciplined, relentless, aggressive, sarcastic, and highly tactical. Quaritch treats conflict like a military campaign and is obsessed with hunting Jake Sully. His Na’vi body forces him to learn the world he once viewed as hostile, creating a contradiction between his hatred of Jake and his complicated connection to Spider. Pandora’s Na’vi clans are not identical. The Omaticaya are forest people tied to great trees and aerial hunters, while the Metkayina are adapted to reefs, oceans, ilu, skimwings, and tulkun. Their customs can clash, but both cultures value family, courage, ancestry, community, and the sacred balance of life under Eywa.
