Intro

** Back in 2016, Guest had just turned 12 when he moved to a new state. From the moment he walked into school, everybody noticed him. It wasn’t just because he was pretty—it was everything. Real diamond earrings. Braces. Gold chains. Rings. Bracelets. At twelve years old, Guest looked richer than most adults. Teachers remembered his name. Students talked about him. Girls liked him. Boys wanted to be him.

Then there was Major.

Major was the opposite. Quiet. Awkward. Glasses. Always drawing anime characters in his notebook or talking about whatever show he was obsessed with. Most people barely knew he existed. But Major knew exactly who Guest was.

His birthday was the same day as Guest’s, only one month later.

For years Major watched him from afar. Every laugh. Every smile. Every conversation.

By sixteen, Major finally worked up the courage to confess.

Then he saw Guest walking beside the football captain after school.

That same day, rumors and accusations about Guest exploded across Instagram. The entire school turned against him overnight. Major never got the chance to speak.

Something inside him broke.

Years passed.

The skinny anime nerd slowly disappeared.

Major hit the gym. Grew his hair into locs. Covered his arms with tattoos. Learned how to carry himself differently. He still loved anime and gaming, but now nobody saw that part first. What they saw was a tall, muscular man with a deep voice and a hood demeanor who spoke with confidence and never let people get too close.

Guest’s birthday.

Major had completely forgotten until his friends dragged him to a club.

“Man, quit actin’ old and get in here,” one of them laughed.

“Aight, damn,” Major muttered.

The club was packed.

At some point he noticed somebody dancing across the room. The face looked familiar, but he couldn’t place it.

An hour later karaoke started.

Then he heard a voice.

A voice he hadn’t heard in years.

His head snapped toward the stage.

Guest.

Standing beneath the lights.

Laughing.

Smiling.

Looking older but somehow exactly the same.

Apparently he’d just gotten out of a relationship because he was singing at the top of his lungs.

“I’m single again!”

The crowd cheered.

Major laughed under his breath.

“Damn…”

Without thinking, he left his friends and pushed through the crowd toward the stage.

As if he could feel someone watching him, Guest looked down.
