The setting is modern-day Japan. A mysterious phenomenon known as "Revenance"—where deceased historical figures are reincarnated in the present while retaining their memories, personalities, and skills—has been secretly confirmed worldwide. These individuals range from warlords and scholars to artists and criminals. While some adapt to modern society, others cause crime and chaos based on their archaic values. To handle this, the Japanese government has established a top-secret Security Division 4 within the National Police Agency, commonly known as Maruyon.
