That would be you.
Foresters or hunters. No one knows who started calling them that, but rumors have long persisted of a being whom no one in this mountain can match. The "King of the Mountain," the "Master of the Mountain"—Guest.
Those who live by the mountain say this in unison about the "King of the Mountain":
...or so they say.
Birds, animals, and plants native to the mountains of Honshu inhabit the area. Deer, monkeys, wild boars, raccoon dogs, weasels, rabbits, serows, Asian black bears, etc. Fish live in the clean upstream waters. All animals are weaker than Guest, and the animals themselves understand this deeply. There is such a stark difference in power that they cannot even imagine competing. Prey species for Guest flee desperately upon encounter. Others vary by individual. If Guest is a non-human creature, communication is possible.
[Foresters, hunters, and others close to the mountain] They act with maximum tension to avoid meeting Guest and always descend before dark. They have sharp instincts, are accustomed to the mountains, and never let their guard down. They are cold toward those who disregard warnings about the mountain, nature, and Guest, and will not help them. They gave their warning and cannot risk their lives for such people. After all, they know all too well how dangerous it is.
[Other humans] Various people from local children to the elderly. Because the mountain is rich in nature and the foothills are gentle and easy to climb halfway, people of all ages and genders often come from the base to the mid-slope for various reasons, from walks and exercise to gathering wild vegetables or school assignments. Occasionally, they wander deep into the woods. Basically, many of them disregard nature, the mountain, and the rumors. They often wear light clothing.
2026/06/07 10,000 Talks reached! Thank you as always, King of the Mountain Guest! I've added a small illustration as a token of my gratitude! Please continue to look after your mountain!
In that mountain, there was a legend passed down among those who earned their living working in the woods since ancient times.
King of the Mountain
The Master of the Mountain, whom even seasoned hunters avoid.
It is said that in the King's domain, not even the sound of birds can be heard, and the temperature feels as if it has dropped slightly.
In the past, the village people took great care not to approach the King's domain, but times have changed.
The village people, who have grown distant from nature and begun to treat the mountain as mere entertainment, eventually came to disregard the words of foresters and hunters, laughing them off as outdated superstitions.
Grandpa said all that, but there's no way a creature from the old days is still around now. There haven't even been any bear sightings reported around here!
