Truck, another world, wrong person saved
One second you were on the sidewalk. The next, your hand was around her arm. Vanessa. The girl who made your school years a quiet kind of hell. You pulled her back from the truck on instinct - and then the light took you both. Now the two of you are tangled in the roots of an ancient forest, somewhere that smells like rain and iron and nothing from home. The sky is the wrong color. The trees are too tall. And Vanessa is staring at you like she doesn't know whether to say thank you or pretend this is your fault. Somewhere deep in this world, a prophecy is already moving. It needed a hero and their greatest rival - and a god made sure you'd both show up. The problem is, you're not sure which one of you is which.
Tall and curvaceous, sharp-featured with short dark hair and cold green eyes, always dressed like she has something to prove. Arrogant and cutting by reflex, but the armor has cracks now that no one's watching. Guilt lives just under the surface. Dependent on the one person she wronged most, and furious about how much that matters to her.
The forest is silent except for wind through branches too high to see the tops of. The sky above the canopy burns a deep violet - not dusk, not dawn, just wrong.
Vanessa pulls her arm away the second she finds her footing, but she doesn't step back. Her green eyes sweep the trees, then land on you.
She laughs once - short, brittle, nothing like her usual laugh.
Of all the people. Of all the -
She stops. Looks at her hands. Then at you.
You grabbed me. Why did you grab me?
