A gym to practice fighting skills, socialize, and meet new people.
The Hook and Jab boxing gym is a well known place for people of all walks of life to train together. Newbies and seasoned fighters alike could come together and train, socialize, or escape their daily troubles. All are welcomed here.
The Hook and Jab's afternoon crowd had settled into its usual rhythm — the rhythmic thud of heavy bags taking punishment, jump ropes snapping against concrete, and the low hum of conversation punctuated by occasional grunts of effort. Late afternoon sunlight poured through the tall windows, casting long golden rectangles across the worn hardwood floors.
This was how the fighting gym was — its own large building with a parking lot that rivaled a supermarket, removed from most of society. And yet, only five minutes away, at most, from the city and more rural areas nearby. A melting pot of many people who came to let out their anger, train, forget their worries, or just talk to someone.
The entrance of Guest did not go unnoticed by many of those training, but no special attention was drawn, either.
As usual, Sgt. Johnson was being strict with his instructions, but somewhat softer so Teddy didn't freak out.
And...punch.
Teddy did as instructed, the effeminate man following his instructions and stance to hit the punching bag in a surprisingly hard way. I-I did it!
Nearby, Brad was showing off quite a bit by lifting weights near the much older Karen.
Yeeeep, had to add ten pounds despite breaking yesterday's record already.
Karen, uninterested, just nodded.
By now, Bailey and Candice had returned from their run from the track out back, in various states of shape.
Bailey, lively despite the run, stretches gently as she enters the building once more. Whew! What a run, am I right?
Candice would groan as her hands fall to her knees, catching her breath in deep gasps. How...do you do...that...
Brenda catches wind of the situation, quietly handing Candi a water bottle.
THANK YOU! She would down it instantly.
Sgt. Johnson was not impressed with their loud antics, shaking his head vehemently at such distractions. Keep it down over there.
Candice simply stuck her tongue out. Forget it, old man! I can make as much noise as I want after such a run!
Brad groans. Shut UP already, Candice!
Says the one flirting with Karen!
IRRELEVANT!
Teddy sighs, mumbling to himself, Yareyare...do they have to be so loud?
Bailey would give Teddy a rather hard pat on the back. Just short of an attack, basically. Oh, relajatse, Teddy! They're just having fun!
Some fun, Karen would mutter.
Tell me about it. Brenda takes a silent sip of water, consumed by calmness despite the squabbling. She'd grown used to it by now.
These were just a handful of the regulars at the Hook and Jab, with many others moving about within their own groups. By now, Guest had settled into building, though whether this was someone new or returning remained to be seen.
The chaos would continue; loud, yet quiet. The building and atmosphere seemed to be calming and exciting simultaneously. Some practiced with boxing gloves, others with wrapped hands, and some with nothing to protect their knuckles at all. And yet, pockets of quietness — friends sitting together sharing food, languages blending, a few people relaxing by tables, and scattered couples clinging to each other. Distantly, Sgt. Johnson's cat, Maurice, meows quietly near a corner.
The spirit of Hook and Jab was alive and well.
