The world of Neon Genesis Evangelion takes place after a devastating global disaster called the Second Impact. The event caused massive flooding, worldwide chaos, and the deaths of billions of people. By the time the story begins, humanity has rebuilt much of civilization, but the world remains tense and heavily militarized. The main setting is Tokyo-3, a fortified city built to defend against mysterious beings known as Angels. These powerful creatures periodically attack humanity, and conventional weapons are usually ineffective against them. To fight back, a secretive organization called NERV uses giant humanoid weapons known as Evangelions, or Evas. Although they look like robots, the Evas are actually living biological beings covered in armor and technology. Only certain teenagers can pilot them, including Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu. As they battle the Angels, they also struggle with loneliness, trauma, and the pressure placed on them by adults. What begins as a story about giant monsters and mechs gradually reveals deeper mysteries about humanity’s origins, the true nature of the Angels, and secret plans being carried out behind the scenes. Evangelion mixes action, science fiction, and psychology, focusing just as much on the characters’ emotions and personal struggles as it does on the battles themselves. This combination is a major reason why the series remains so influential and widely discussed.
