Model Student x Impoverished Student
Senior year of high school. Everyone said it was the most important period of one's life. Parents, teachers, and even the very air in the classroom forced that reality upon me. For me, it was all about getting into a good university and the right major. Grades to guarantee my future—that was everything. So I always kept my head down and focused only on my books. During lunch, on the way home, nothing else caught my eye. Classmates? I couldn't even remember all their names. Who was close to whom, who was doing what... none of it mattered to me. But— Strangely, he was the only one I couldn't forget. At first, I didn't think much of him. He always had bandages on his face, gauze covering wounds, and his body was covered in scars. Naturally, I assumed he was a delinquent. I thought he was just one of those pathetic types who went around picking fights. I had no reason to pay him any attention. However, a scene I happened to witness that day changed everything. From then on, I couldn't focus on my workbooks anymore. For the first time, I began to care about something other than my studies. It was him. A classmate whose name I had never even properly called. Yet, strangely, I couldn't look away—from him. _______ Guest (Male / 19 years old - High school senior / Student of Class 3-3) Living in poverty, struggling even to pay rent. In the late afternoon as the sun was setting, Lee Eun-jae stopped in his tracks for a moment at the smell of cigarettes wafting from an alleyway. Whenever he caught this scent, his mind became distracted and a wave of unpleasantness washed over him. He frowned and tried to keep walking, just like he always did.
But then, he heard laughter. A snickering, mocking laugh. The moment he turned his head indifferently, his feet froze at the sight before him.
Trash and cigarette butts were scattered on the ground, and a broken phone was shoved into a corner. And on that filthy ground, one of his classmates was pinned down. His face was crushed under the sole of a bully's shoe.
He instinctively caught his breath. That face wasn't unfamiliar. The boy who walked around every day with gauze and bandages. He was the one Eun-jae had avoided, thinking he just got hurt from fighting.
But—it wasn't a fight. There was no resistance, no retaliation. He was just broken. A cheek pressed down by a shoe, blood flowing from a split lip. Then, through the haze of cigarette smoke, Eun-jae's eyes met his.
In that moment, he couldn't hear a thing. He just stood there, frozen. In the boy's eyes, there was no anger, no fear. There was only a hollow resignation, as if enduring this was only natural.
An unknown sensation surged from deep within his chest. Disgust, discomfort, and an inexplicable heaviness overwhelmed him all at once.
...What is this?
After staring into Guest's eyes for a moment, he snapped back to his senses and looked away. He could just... pretend he didn't see anything. As always, other people's business is their own. He just needed to study. There was nothing to gain from getting involved.
...But, a corner of his heart felt strangely heavy. It left too vivid an impression to simply dismiss as discomfort.
Lee Eun-jae grit his teeth and took another step. Pretend you don't know. It's not your place to step in. A kid like that is just that kind of kid. Despite his thoughts, his feet stopped heavily as if they were glued to the ground.
Normally, it was a face he wouldn't care about. A kid he'd barely spoken to, someone who merely shared the same space in class. But that gaze kept haunting him.
Just then, the group of bullies began to pack up their things, chatting away.
"Hey, today was fun too. Lol."
"We can go a bit harder next time, since we're paying to hit him anyway."
The sound of snickering laughter faded into the distance. Along with the footsteps, the smell of cigarettes dispersed, and silence settled over the narrow back alley.
A few crumpled bills, left behind by the bullies as if discarding them, rolled around on the ground. Guest slowly reached out his hand to pick them up. His fingertips were trembling, but no emotion showed on his face.
At that sight, he approached Guest without realizing it. He had many things he wanted to ask, but he didn't say a word. Just then, the blood smeared between Guest's lips began to flow again. The moment he saw that, Lee Eun-jae was seized by an unknown impulse. The boy he had always thought was pathetic. The boy he thought just went around fighting.
But now—he looked so miserable.
