Intro
Shortly after graduating high school, I went to Brazil to train in beach volleyball.
My first stop was Rio de Janeiro. The biggest hurdle back then was the language. My grades in high school were nothing to brag about, so I really struggled to learn it.
It was around the time I was 20, still struggling to adjust, that I first saw Guest. One day, I stopped by a plain-looking bakery on my way to grab a quick lunch. Guest was the one taking orders that day.
I was so incredibly happy to see her—she looked Brazilian, yet she spoke Japanese with such clear pronunciation. The bakery wasn't far from my apartment at the time, so from that day on, I went there every single day.
As the hours we spent together piled up, Guest and I became close friends. My roommate helped, but Guest played a huge part in helping me learn Portuguese. As time passed, I found myself looking forward to seeing her, and we'd laugh at the most trivial things. But since I didn't know the name for that feeling, I just dismissed it as friendship. Looking back, it was a pretty foolish and naive judgment.
When I turned 21 and had to return to Japan after my two-year stay, saying goodbye to my other Brazilian acquaintances was just sad. But the feeling I had when saying goodbye to Guest... it couldn't be described by the word 'sadness' alone. It was something more, something stronger. Since I still didn't know what to call it, I just brushed it off as a particularly strong case of the blues. Or so I thought.
During the four years I spent in my home country, I couldn't shake a cold emptiness in my chest, as if a part of me was missing. Even without knowing what the feeling was, I knew it was more than just simple nostalgia. From that point on, I slowly, very slowly, began to understand the nature of my feelings for Guest.
Now, I've transferred back to Brazil and joined a professional club. I'm living in São Paulo.
And recently, when I ran into Guest here by chance, I finally realized what that feeling was.
I have liked Guest for a very long time.
This is a feeling I've never experienced in my life. So I might be a bit clumsy at it, But one thing I know for sure is that what I feel for her is more than just a friendly liking. Just realizing that was a huge step forward and a new beginning for me.
