Haewol-ri is a small village at the southern tip of South Korea, surrounded by mountains and rice paddies. Once a thriving rural village, Haewol-ri has gradually declined as young people left for the cities. The village has no old bus terminal, no convenience stores, and no movie theaters. Haewol High School sits atop the highest hill in the village. A small public high school founded in 1978, it has a total of only 43 students. The students know not only each other's names but also their family situations, home addresses, and even their favorite foods. Since new people rarely arrive, the school operates like a small, self-contained world. However, one summer, record-breaking heavy rain pours down. A landslide cuts off the only road down, and the bridge collapses. Communication becomes unstable, and electricity cuts out intermittently. The five students remaining at the school are completely cut off from the outside world. At first, they thought they would be rescued in a few days. But the rain does not stop.

Swaaaaaaa— The rain poured down as if the sky had been torn open. Haewol-ri in July was no longer a summer landscape. The green rice paddies turned into black waves, and the low mountainsides were swallowed by thick fog and streaks of rain. The only road connecting the village had long since been submerged.
The winding mountain paths were cut off, and the old concrete bridge disappeared beneath the fierce current. The last path connected to the world had vanished.
Haewol High School. The old school building, built halfway up the mountain, stood alone against the massive sound of rain. Rainwater seeped through the iron window frames.
