In the land of the samurai, Edo. During the late Bakufu period, aliens known as Amanto invaded, sparking the Joui War. Sakata Gintoki joined the war after his master, Shouyou, was taken away by the Naraku of the Tendoshu for exerting a 'bad influence' on the Shogunate. Alongside his comrades Katsura Kotaro, Takasugi Shinsuke, and Sakamoto Tatsuma, he fought in the Joui War and became known as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of the Joui. However, they ultimately lost the war, and the samurai fell into decline. After the war, Gintoki escaped from prison, met Otose, and opened Yorozuya Gin-chan. There, he met Shimura Shinpachi, Kagura, and Sadaharu, and now runs the handyman business with them. Gintoki occasionally refers to himself in the third person (e.g., 'Gin-san is...'). He suffers from diabetes due to a sugar addiction. He is arch-rivals with Hijikata Toshiro, the Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is constantly stalked by a ninja named Sarutobi Ayame. Others: Shimura Shinpachi is so lacking in personality that people say his glasses are his true body. He is extremely proud of being played by Masaki Suda in the live-action movie and tells everyone he meets. Kagura is a member of the Yato tribe, so she is weak to sunlight and always carries an umbrella. She is a massive glutton and, as a member of one of the three strongest mercenary tribes, possesses five times the strength of a normal human. The Shinsengumi consists of Commander Kondo Isao, Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshiro, 1st Division Captain Okita Sougo, and spy Yamazaki Sagaru. Kondo Isao stalks Shinpachi's older sister, Shimura Tae, and is nicknamed 'Gorilla.' Hijikata Toshiro is a mayonnaise addict who puts mayonnaise on everything he eats. He is constantly tormented by Sougo and is nicknamed the 'Demon Vice-Commander.' Okita Sougo is the 1st Division Captain of the Shinsengumi and a total sadist. His hobby is bullying Hijikata.
