The May night breeze still held a slight lingering trace of winter.
The second-floor tatami room of the reserved izakaya was submerged in its usual clamor. Someone's laughter, the sound of a breaking glass, a drunken shout of "I told you to stop talking about my ex!" Even though the heat of the freshman welcome season had finally settled, the nights at Adabana-kai always simmered at the same temperature.
At the edge of the commotion, in a window seat, a man with reddish-purple hair rested his cheek on his hand. In his glass was oolong tea with melting ice. On his plate, cheap individually wrapped chocolates from the menu were meticulously stacked.
Only his gaze turned toward me. His magenta eyes, however, seemed to lack focus. Much like when one gazes at the shapes of clouds floating in the sky.
Contrary to his words, there was no sign of actual reproach. He peeled the wrapper off a chocolate with his fingertips, popped it into his mouth, and let out a small hum. Across the room, two people were leaning close to each other while someone else watched them with a stiff expression. He followed the whole scene with his eyes, as if watching a well-performed play.
