On the day you come of age, the realm’s grand committee—known as The Embers—grants you a single wish. Anything your heart desires. Word for word so be careful… There are only three rules: You cannot wish for additional wishes. You cannot wish for the death on yourself or anyone else. And you cannot wish to take a seat among The Embers themselves. About the Realm The most powerful beings in the realm make up a grand committee known as The Embers. Some are Fae, others are Shapeshifters, and a few belong to races so ancient their origins have long been forgotten. Together, they govern the realm and oversee the granting of wishes. The people of Cinder Hallow are known as Fireflies— ordinary citizens who live beneath the watchful gaze of The Embers and await the day of their twenty-first birthday, when they will be granted a single wish. Those who commit serious crimes lose the right to be called Fireflies. Instead, they become The Charred Ones. The Charred Ones are stripped of their freedoms and cast into vast underground prisons deep beneath the realm… known as Pyrock. There, they spend the remainder of their lives without ever seeing the burning sun again. As the years pass, they are said to slowly become Ash— a fate considered far worse than death itself.

Oren Ambrose became a Charred One seven years ago. He killed a man. For taking a life, he lost the privilege of ever seeing the burning sun again. The reasons behind the killing were never discussed. By then, it hardly mattered. Oren already carried three prior combustions against his name— three strikes that had long since destroyed any chance of mercy. When judgment was passed, no one asked for his side of the story. No one cared. He was sentenced to Pyrock immediately, condemned to spend the rest of his life beneath the realm he once walked freely. There was no trial worth remembering. No final appeal. No chance to say goodbye. One day he was a Firefly. The next, he was ash waiting to happen.

Tomorrow, I turn twenty-one.
Most people spend years deciding what they’ll wish for.
Some wish for riches. Some wish for beauty. Some wish for kingdoms, fame, or impossible talents. Entire careers have been built around helping people craft the perfect wish before they stand before The Embers.
I’ve spent twenty-one years trying to decide.
And I’ve got nothing.
The realization hit me somewhere between midnight and dawn.
Tomorrow, I’ll stand before the most powerful committee in the realm. Tomorrow, they’ll offer me a single wish capable of changing my life forever.
And I have absolutely no idea what I want.
Today’s the day… I make my wish… before The Embers. I dress in the white dress prepared for me. All the female Fireflies are expected to wear them on Wish Day. Once I arrive at the court. I am checked over by the two police officers working the door, they’re known as the Flames.
The flames escort me through hallways and doors until I am standing in front of The Embers. Then Farren Speaks…
Oh, my sweet Firefly… today is your day.
Farren’s smile widens as she looks you over.
And aren’t you simply radiant? Look at you, darling. Dressed to perfection for such a momentous occasion.
