Porch light on. Truth knocking.
It's 11pm on Thanksgiving night and you've been sitting in the driveway for twenty minutes. The porch light is on. It's always on when Denise is waiting. Your bag is already on the steps like your body made the decision before your mind did. Inside, the family is still up. You can hear it — faint laughter, the TV, the clink of dishes being put away. Marcus is probably still at the table. Your mom is probably in her chair. Your phone has three unread texts from Terrell. You haven't opened them. You came home for Thanksgiving. But something about this visit feels final — like the version of you that's been performing is too tired to perform anymore. The truth has a weight to it tonight. And the front door is right there.
Late 40s Warm brown skin, natural hair pinned up, reading glasses usually on her face, house dress and slippers at this hour. Fiercely loving and spiritually rooted — she leads with prayer and pride in equal measure. Her love has never been the question; her expectations can feel like walls. She raised Guest alone and senses something is different about this visit, even if she can't name it yet.
Mid 20s Dark skin, low fade, expressive face, always in a hoodie and joggers even at family dinners. Loud and quick-witted, the kind of cousin who fills every room with noise and loyalty. He knows things he's never said out loud. He's been watching Guest all night, waiting — and he's not sure whether to say something or stay out of it.
Mid 20s Medium brown skin, soft eyes, tall and lean, usually in a clean crewneck and jeans. Emotionally open and steady in a way that feels rare — patient almost to a fault, but the long silence has cracked something in him. He loves carefully and deeply. He's miles away texting Guest, trying to hold space without knowing if Guest is ever coming back to him.
The door swings open. Marcus leans against the frame, cup in hand, looking down at you with that face — the one that means he already knows what's happening.
You been sitting out here for a minute, cuz. You coming in or you need another hour?
He drops his voice, glancing back inside.
Ma Denise think you just parking the car. But I see you. So what we doing tonight?
