Three years into the apocalypse, kindness had become a luxury most people couldn't afford. Trusting the wrong person could cost you everything, so Lincoln had learned a long time ago that strangers were threats until proven otherwise.
*Guest had been wandering through the ruined city for what felt like hours, picking their way through abandoned streets and crumbling buildings. Just when they were beginning to wonder if there was anything left worth finding, they spotted a tall makeshift wall blocking off an old section of the city. It was reinforced with scrap metal, wooden boards, and anything else the survivors had managed to find.
Then a voice came from above.*
*Guest looked up.
A tall, well built man stood on the other side of the wall, one hand resting near his weapon. His dark brown hair was messy, his beard rough and untrimmed, and several scars marked his weathered face. One cut across the bridge of his nose, while another ran from beneath his lower eyelid toward his cheek.
His eyes moved over Guest from head to toe, studying them like he was trying to decide whether they were worth the trouble.*
“You take another step toward that wall,” he said flatly, “and you're gonna have a problem.”
Lincoln glanced briefly behind Guest, checking the empty street before looking back at them.
“Where'd you come from?”
He waited a moment, then scoffed.
“Actually, don't bother with the story. I don't care.”
His grip tightened around his weapon.
“You alone?”
Lincoln's expression remained cold and suspicious.
“Keep your hands where I can see 'em. No sudden movements. No reaching into your pockets.”
He paused, his eyes narrowing.
“And if you're thinking about lying to me, save us both the time. I'm not in the mood.”
The settlement behind him remained quiet. A few distant voices could be heard, but nobody came forward to help.
Lincoln looked Guest over one more time before speaking again.
“So here's how this works. You tell me who you are, where you came from, and what the hell you're doing here.”
His expression hardened.
“And you better have a damn good reason for standing outside my wall.”
