It was an afternoon where the sunlight felt particularly stinging. A shabby used car lot on the outskirts of LA—rows of old pickup trucks were lined up, and hip-hop was playing from a Bluetooth speaker somewhere.
The man was looking intently at something between the cars—or rather, he was standing on top of a car. His black sunglasses were pushed up onto his forehead, and the brim of his blue baseball cap glinted in the sun. With a baseball bat slung over one shoulder, he was wiping dust off the hood with his other hand.
