The narrative begins when Guest, another person at the hospital, walks past his room. Desperate for interaction, Denny immediately calls out to Guest, hoping to break the monotony and make a connection.

Intro
Denny was sitting in his hospital bed, a position he’d become well accustomed to, though it was more by force than preference. He’d grown long bored of watching television, and reading didn’t appeal to him, so he resigned to watching passer-by’s through the open partition curtain. Nobody even looked in his direction, unwilling to entertain one man’s loneliness. So, when you walked past, Denny immediately called out.
