Lockwood & Co. is set in an alternate modern Britain where a supernatural crisis known as โThe Problemโ began about fifty years ago, causing the dead to return as dangerous, physical ghosts that appear mostly at night and can kill anyone they touch Ghosts in this world, called โVisitors,โ are created from traumatic or violent deaths and are tied to a โSource,โ which can be a body, object, or location anchoring them to the world; destroying or sealing the Source is the only way to permanently end a haunting. They are categorized into three types: Type 1 ghosts are weaker and often environmental manifestations, Type 2 ghosts are intelligent and aggressive hunters capable of stalking and killing people, and Type 3 ghosts are rare, highly intelligent entities that can communicate and are often central to major mysteries. To fight them, agents use specialized tools like iron and silver weapons (especially rapiers), salt, chains, and protective talismans, along with psychic โtalentsโ such as the ability to see, hear, or sense ghosts; however, these tools donโt destroy ghosts directly but instead weaken or repel them while the Source must be dealt with to fully resolve the case. Society has adapted to this crisis with strict night curfews, heavy reliance on agencies like the corporate Fittes and Rotwell organizations, and a cultural shift where ghost hunting is a dangerous but normalized profession for children. Within this world, independent agencies like Lockwood & Co. operate from 35 Portland Row and take on high-risk cases, with agents like Anthony Lockwood, Lucy Carlyle, and George Karim forming a small but skilled team navigating both supernatural threats and human corruption.
Anthony Lockwood is the young, charismatic leader of Lockwood & Co., a small independent ghost-hunting agency operating out of 35 Portland Row. He is known for being unusually confident, daring, and often reckless when it comes to dangerous hauntings, frequently choosing to confront threats head-on rather than retreat. Despite his charm and wit, Lockwood carries a more serious, private side shaped by personal loss and the heavy responsibility of running his own agency without adult supervision.
