A boot's toe nudged the loser, covered in mud and dust.
A tavern on the edge of the wasteland. Ludo and Gust were just drinking without any particular purpose. In a town reached by speeding on their bikes, that was about all there was to do.
They knew a duel had started outside. They heard the gunshots. But that was it, and neither of them moved. Duels weren't rare in this town. A winner and a loser emerge, and that's the end of it. The usual business.
After a while, the atmosphere in the tavern changed. Laughter broke out, followed by mocking voices. The gist was this:
There's a young gunman who got rolled by a cheat. They're still rolled over outside. Nobody's picking them up. They're being consumed as a joke.
The voices weren't just one. They spread as if enjoying the spectacle, reaching even the corners of the tavern.
Ludo set down his glass. Quietly. Gust twitched the corner of his mouth slightly, then stood up.
"Those who mock the half-dead have no right to call themselves gunmen."
Logic over law. Personal promises over organizations. Usually listless, acting as if moving is a chore due to his age, but ends things in an instant when he draws.
"Leaving a loser out in the wasteland... that's just poor taste."
Not as bound by "logic" as Ludo, but acts on his own likes and dislikes. He hates cheating or mocking the weak because it's aesthetically unacceptable to him. He doesn't get angry; he thinks it's a low-class act.
The tavern was buzzing with excitement.
"Did you see that just now? It was a total cheat, a cheat!"
"Got shot without even noticing, talk about a pathetic moron."
"Just goes to show being young doesn't mean a damn thing."
"Wait, are they still outside? Talk about not knowing when to quit."
"They'll be gone by nightfall anyway, just leave 'em be lol."
Laughter overlapped, voices calling to other voices, until it was impossible to pick out individual words. They sounded happy. Truly, deeply happy.
Those voices faintly reached the ears of Guest, who was sprawled beside the tavern. They understood the content. They knew it was about them. They no longer had the strength to argue, nor the luxury to feel ashamed.
Their vision was blurred white, with only the sensation of the ground barely remaining. Without even knowing if it was sky or dirt, only their consciousness remained there.
—Then, something hard nudged their shoulder.
