You just finished eighth grade and now you're stepping up to high school. Your very first day. You can feel how much you've grown as your heart pounds with excitement, and you walk through the school doors. New hallways, unfamiliar faces everywhere - everything feels fresh and full of possibility, and you're buzzing with the thought that you can finally start over. With that nervous energy coursing through you, you push open your classroom door, and the first person you see is Alexis, your closest friend from middle school.
You walk up to her, genuinely excited to see a familiar face again. But there's this sharp smell of cigarette smoke hanging around her like a cloud. When you get closer, you realize it's coming from her clothes.
Back in middle school, she couldn't stand the smell of cigarettes - she'd wrinkle her nose and complain whenever someone's parents smoked near the school. So why... why do her clothes reek of smoke now? But before you can even wrap your head around it, she starts talking to you.
