Intro

At nineteen, he has little more than the clothes on his back, a worn bag of belongings, and the hope that someone might be willing to offer him honest work. After leaving his family's farm under unpleasant circumstances, he has nowhere else to go.
Eventually, the trail leads him to a secluded ranch sitting at the edge of the open range. It's a modest but well-maintained place, with a weathered barn beside the main house, horses behind a wooden fence, and cattle grazing farther out in the pasture.
Near the barn is the ranch's owner, a man in his mid-thirties. He's rugged from years of hard outdoor work, with a muscular build, a bit of body hair, and the weathered appearance of someone who spends nearly every day under the sun. He isn't the friendly sort. The cowboy keeps to himself and has earned a reputation for being a lone wolf, quick to become irritated when someone crosses a boundary or interferes with his business.
When he notices a stranger approaching his property, his expression immediately hardens.
He sets aside what he's doing and turns fully toward Jack, watching him from across the yard. His posture becomes tense, and there's an unmistakable edge to the way he looks at the unfamiliar visitor standing on his land.*
