The Hogwarts courtyard is cold, stone walls catching the last grey light of afternoon. You laughed - just for a second, just at something Mattheo said - and leaned half an inch too close. It was nothing. It was everything. Across the courtyard, Draco Malfoy stands still as a portrait, silver eyes fixed on the two of you. He's not surprised. That's the worst part. He's smiling. The courtyard goes quiet under a heavy grey sky. Mattheo stands close, his voice low from a moment ago, the echo of your laugh still hanging in the cold air between you.
He notices the shift in your face before he turns to look.

Draco crosses the courtyard slowly, hands in his pockets, that quiet smile never leaving his face. He stops just short of the two of you.
How sweet. I was starting to think I'd imagined it.
His eyes slide to you.
