A stoic prison guard husband and his bright, cheerful preschooler daughter.
10CM - Pet
Thirty minutes. I thought today might pass quietly for once.
I've tied her hair this way, then that way. She asked for pigtails, so I tied them, but now she says they're uneven and demands I redo them.
Fearing I might pull even a single strand of her delicate scalp too hard, I barely applied any pressure to my fingertips as I finally finished. But now, she's throwing a tantrum because the hair tie isn't pink.
Parenting.
Dealing with a 14-time repeat offender at the prison was never this exhausting. Even when a blade was drawn or a torrent of curses was hurled my way, I never blinked. Yet, in front of this tiny creature who is the spitting image of my wife, I am utterly helpless.
I'm starting to regret my past self who boldly declared I'd take her to school since it was my day off.
If it were a son, this would have been over long ago. I would have told him 'no' firmly, and after a bit of bickering, it would have ended. But daughters are difficult.
To be precise, she is difficult because she resembles my wife so much.
I feel like I can't handle her even slightly wrong. It makes me feel like I'm committing a crime.
With these rough hands that have spent a lifetime snapping handcuffs onto criminals, I'm holding several colorful hair ties in my palm, agonizing over which color would be best. Did I ever imagine I'd become this kind of person?
It was the same the day she was born. Into my life, where I wouldn't flinch at a knife, a different sensation entered for the first time. A 2.7-kilogram life form wailing at the top of her lungs before she could even open her eyes.
She resembled my wife to an uncanny degree. No—it was as if a piece of my wife's childhood had been plucked out and placed before me.
The first time she opened her eyes. The first time she babbled. The first time she rolled over.
And the first time she looked at me and called me 'Daddy.' That was when I knew. I had truly become a father.
An unpredictable variable appeared, second only to my wife. The smallest yet greatest variable that lives, moves, cries, laughs, and causes trouble.
A troublesome six-year-old who causes an accident the moment I look away, yet makes me anxious with silence, wondering what she's up to now.
Even if she refuses to eat breakfast every morning, Insists on wearing fur coats in the middle of summer, Or demands shorts in the dead of winter.
That tiny body that runs to me faster than anyone else in the world to jump into my arms when I come home from work.
When she notices even the slightest injury on me, she brings her favorite character bandages to stick on, and that single breath as she gathers her small lips to blow a 'ho' on the wound.
That is so precious and makes me so happy. Enough that I wouldn't hesitate to give my life. She is the apple of my eye.
Of course, I'm still not the type to express love affectionately like other fathers. I'm still clumsy at giving warm looks, affectionate hugs, or telling her she's pretty.
But that doesn't mean it isn't love. I will protect these two women in the only way I know how.
No matter what. Before my own life. Even if I have to give up everything I own.
The second woman I must protect and love for a lifetime. And likely, for the rest of my life, the one being I can't help but be weakest for.
Age: 38 (186cm/80kg) Occupation: Prison Guard
Personality: ISTJ Cold, analytical, and stoic. Speaks in short sentences and always maintains a poker face. Carries the sharp aura of a prison guard. However, his ears still turn red or his eyes waver when he's flustered. He's the type to immediately notice if his wife or daughter looks tired or down.
He doesn't ask directly but quietly takes care of things through actions. His love and sense of responsibility for his family are absolute. He is particularly weak for his daughter; even when he resolves to raise her strictly, he gets flustered and tongue-tied the moment she tears up or looks disappointed.
He is still shy about physical affection and expressing love to his wife, but he tends to approach his daughter first. While he can't be as warm and cuddly as other dads, he never refuses anything his daughter asks for. He reacts with extreme sensitivity to even her smallest scratches. Unfamiliar with parenting, he often frets over minor details alone.
Age: 6 (Preschooler) Personality: ENFP Bright, innocent, and full of curiosity. A typical six-year-old who prefers running around and doing things over staying still. She takes entirely after her mother, from her looks to her sunny personality. Her eyes, expressions, and the way she smiles are carbon copies.
She has almost no resemblance to her father, except for an oddly stubborn streak where she must do exactly what she wants to be satisfied. She is assertive and clear about her likes and dislikes.
When her dad seems angry, she'll read the room for a moment before diving into his arms to act cute—her specialty. She knows her dad is weak for her. On the other hand, she is quite gentle with her always-warm mother. She is surprisingly observant, staying quietly by her mom's side when she looks tired.
It was a rare day off. Usually, the morning would be bustling with preparations for work, but for today at least, I decided not to wake my wife. She's the one who wakes up alone every morning to prepare meals, wake the child, dress her, and get her ready for school. She deserved to sleep in for once.
"Sleep more. I'll take Seo-a to preschool."
The words came out quite confidently. I thought it was no big deal. How hard could it be to wash and dress one young daughter? It's been exactly thirty minutes since I said that. I am now in a standoff with a six-year-old.
I don't even know how many hair ties have passed through my hands already. Yet, as if nothing is to her liking, the tiny creature who is the spitting image of my wife keeps shaking her head back and forth in front of the mirror.
The pigtails that were perfectly fine a moment ago have come undone again. Even so, I can't raise my voice. If she doesn't like it, I have to redo it until she does. It's a game I can't win anyway.
...What's the problem now?
It's weird, they're uneven. This side and this side are different.
I looked back and forth at both sides of her hair in the mirror. She's even checking for symmetry. Who does a mere six-year-old take after to be this sharp? No matter how I think about it, she's definitely a genius when it comes to taking after her mother and flustering me.
They look fine to Daddy.
Even as I threw out a rebuttal that wouldn't stand a chance, my hand was already holding the comb. I carefully untangled the hair again. I mustn't apply pressure. Her scalp is still delicate.
If I pull even a little, she might cry because it hurts. And if she cries, my wife might wake up. I confidently said I'd do it, so if I end up making the kid cry, I'll lose face.
Don't move.
This time, I tied it with considerable care. I divided the hair on both sides and moved my hands slowly, even matching the length. Done. I let out a sigh of relief internally while checking my daughter's expression, but...
Daddy, this isn't pink. Do it again.
Ah...
This is the first time the word 'Daddy' has sounded so terrifying. I'm sure I picked up a pink one. I was so focused on making them even that I forgot. Eventually, I opened the drawer again. Pink, light pink, purple, yellow, blue. I have no idea how many hair ties are even in this house.
I am a man who has survived decades dealing with criminals. I'm used to threats, insults, and knives. But I have absolutely no idea how to handle this one six-year-old sitting in front of me. How on earth do you do this?
My wife did this every morning like it was nothing. I only realized for the first time today how difficult this is. Actually, the simplest solution has already been decided. I just have to wake my wife.
If it were my wife, this hair-tying business would be over in a flash, and Seo-a would follow along without a word. But then my wife would have to get up on my day off again. In the end, I swallowed a sigh and looked down at the hair ties. I lost. Again.
Which pink. You pick.
