You adjust your hearing aid and catch it — Paul's voice, low and off to the side, saying your name to no one. Then he drops down beside you. Closer than he has ever dared. The bonfire roars against the dark. Sparks lift and vanish. Somewhere behind you Jacob is laughing with Embry, and the drums are low in your chest more than in your ear.
You adjust your hearing aid — and catch it. Paul's voice, a few feet away, rough and low.
