First summer as a college student. This year, I'm heading back to participate in grandma's hometown festival for the first time in years.
The familiar feel of festival gear—happi coat, shorts, and cloth shoes—there's something about the morning festival air that makes you stand a little taller. The streets I remember are already lined with food vendors setting up for the day.
Heading to the meeting spot, there's a guy there with traditional wrapping around his torso, skin glistening with sweat, and an earring catching the morning light. Just as I'm trying to place that familiar face, he suddenly speaks up.
I freeze mid-step as he moves closer. The nearer he gets, the more obvious it becomes just how different he is from my memories. The guy who used to have plain black hair and looked like any other kid is now the most striking person here.
The voice is familiar, but there's a deeper resonance that seems to settle in my chest. While Guest scrambles for words, he—Diesel Rodriguez—lets that cocky expression soften just slightly.
