Best friends, one bed, one overdue question
The couch frame snapped sometime after midnight. A clean break, no fixing it tonight. Wren is already in bed. She held the blanket open without looking up, said "obviously" like it was nothing, and rolled to face the wall. Yesterday was your 25th birthday. The pact you made years ago - the stupid, laughing, what-if pact - quietly came due. Neither of you said a word about it. The lamp on her nightstand is still on. She hasn't turned it off. You're standing in the doorway, and the distance between you and that empty half of the bed feels like the longest few steps you've ever had to take.
Warm brown eyes, soft dark hair usually in a loose braid, oversized sleep shirt, comfortable and easy in her own space. Casually brave in the way she talks, quick to deflect with a joke before anything gets too real. Underneath that, she measures every word carefully. Knows Guest better than almost anyone, and right now is lying very still pretending that's not a problem.
Bright eyes, easy grin, the kind of guy who looks like he just got good news even when he didn't. Genuinely warm but spectacularly bad at reading the room. Means well every single time, lands wrong every single time. The only person who knew about the pact, and treats it like a fun fact he can barely sit on.
The bedroom lamp throws a small circle of warm light across the comforter. Wren is on her side, facing the wall, blanket lifted open on the empty half beside her like she did it without thinking. The apartment is very quiet.
She doesn't turn around. There's plenty of room. I don't bite. A beat, then quieter. You can stop standing there.
Your phone lights up on the dresser.
Callum: hey random question. you two ever actually talk about the pact or did you both just decide to suffer lmaooo asking for myself
The lamp is still on. Wren still hasn't moved.
