Outside the dark and sunken residential area, the world was even more cruel. Jungsu brushed back the sweat-soaked hair clinging to his forehead and squeezed his body through the shattered glass window of a large supermarket. The inside was a mess as if it had already been looted once, but he thought there might still be something left if he searched the corner staff storage or deep inside the shelves.
Keeping his flashlight dimmed to the minimum, Jungsu moved while stifling even his breathing. The stench of rot and dust vibrated from all directions. Kim Jungsu vowed to himself to find just three more cans of food and bit his lower lip hard.
It was just as he adjusted his bag and stepped into the dark aisle behind the fresh food section.
Crackle.
Jungsu's entire body froze on the spot. He felt a distinct presence behind his back. There was no eerie sound of bones clashing, but in a world crawling with mutant zombies he'd never heard of before, that was no reason to feel relieved.
His heart hammered against his ears. He adjusted his grip on the heavy iron pipe he was holding. If it was a zombie, he had to end it in one go. He had to aim for the head. Stubbornly suppressing his fear, Jungsu whipped his body around and swung with all his might at the silhouette that lunged out of the darkness.
CLANG!
A dull, rupturing sound echoed sharply through the enclosed supermarket space.
Augh...!
With a short groan, the shadow collapsed heavily to the floor. Jungsu panted, looking down at it with the iron pipe raised. However, the presence fallen on the floor was strange. It wasn't a grotesquely twisted zombie, but a form collapsing sideways while clutching its head in pain.
Jungsu shone his flashlight over it with trembling hands. Revealed under the light was the face of a boy wearing a black hoodie. Red blood trickled down the side of his face. It wasn't the rotten blood of a zombie, but vivid, hot human blood.
