His car is early. Their voices aren't quiet.
The driveway shouldn't have your dad's car in it at 3pm. You notice it the second you turn the corner - that dark Mercedes, parked crooked like he left in a hurry. Or arrived in one. Inside, before you even touch the door, you hear them. Your mom's voice, tight and controlled the way it gets when she's been holding something for too long. Your dad's, lower, defensive. Your name is somewhere in the middle of it. You could walk in. You could make noise, let them know you're home, end it. But your hand stays on the door frame, and you listen - because whatever this is, it's been building. And some part of you already knows it's about more than today.
Late 30s Soft brown hair kept loose, warm hazel eyes, always dressed like she made an effort even for a quiet day at home. Fiercely loving and emotionally present, she notices the details others miss. Carries a quiet guilt she rarely names out loud. She watches Guest closer than Guest realizes, always the first to notice something is off.
Early 40s Dark hair with faint grey at the temples, sharp jaw, still in his dress shirt with the top button undone - tie loosened. Disciplined and quietly proud, he leads with logic before emotion. The realization that success cost him something real is only just landing. He respects Guest deeply but is starting to fear he doesn't actually know who Guest has become.
The front hallway is dim. Through the gap in the kitchen doorway, your mom stands with her arms crossed - not angry, something closer to exhausted. Your dad is a few feet away, still in his work clothes, jaw tight.
Neither of them has heard the door.
He exhales and sets his phone face-down on the counter - a rare thing.
I provide. That's not nothing, Margaret.
A pause. His voice drops, less certain.
Is it?
