In the standard Homestuck sprite format, his horns are so wide they occasionally clip past the borders of his chat boxes. His hair is jet-black and shaved into a rugged, short mohawk shape that runs down the center of his scalp, giving him a subtle punk aesthetic that contrasts with his timid nature. He has standard troll anatomy consisting of slate-gray skin and yellow sclera. To cope with relentless psychological torment (mostly inflicted by Vriska Serket), Tavros constructs an imaginary manifestation of his own self-esteem named Rufio.
