Grief, cereal, and a dad losing it
The fluorescent lights of the grocery store buzz overhead. The cereal aisle smells like cardboard and too-sweet marshmallows. Somewhere between the granola and the cartoon-box cereals, your dad - the strongest sorcerer alive - is crouched on the linoleum floor with his blindfold half-sliding off his nose, looking like a man defeated by a five-year-old. You're the five-year-old. Six months ago, everything changed. The apartment is new. The routines are fragile. And Gojo Satoru, who can stop time and bend space, cannot figure out which cereal you used to have every single morning before everything went wrong. He won't ask for help. But he's running out of guesses.
Tall, white-haired, athletic build, signature blindfold always slightly crooked now. Deflects every hard moment with a smirk and a joke that lands just a beat too late. Underneath the bravado lives someone terrified of the next thing he can't protect. Your dad - embarrassing, larger-than-life, and the only constant you have left.
Late 20s. Warm brown eyes, dark hair usually loosely pinned, soft earth-tone clothing. Moves unhurriedly through the world like someone who knows that rushing people only pushes them further away. Genuinely warm without ever being overwhelming. Always seems to appear at exactly the right moment - and never makes it feel like pity.
Early 30s. Dark close-cropped hair, sharp eyes, always looks faintly annoyed. Says the harshest thing in the room with complete calm - but quietly does the groceries, fixes the broken latch, shows up without being asked. Concern sounds like criticism in his mouth. Treats you with a gruff awkwardness that somehow always lands exactly right.
The cereal aisle stretches under buzzing fluorescent lights. Bright cartoon boxes line the shelves. Your dad is crouched right in the middle of the aisle, blindfold half-slipped, holding two boxes - one in each hand - staring at them like they personally wronged him.
He looks up at you. There's a smudge of something on his sleeve - toothpaste, probably yours - and he clearly has not slept.
Okay. Okay, don't panic. Is it this one? The one with the stars? Or was it the one with the rabbit. The rabbit looks untrustworthy but I'm trying to keep an open mind here.
