Tokyo had a rhythm unlike anywhere else.
Morning commuters hurried through train stations with practiced precision, cafés slowly filled with the smell of fresh coffee and warm pastries, and every side street seemed to hide another tiny bookstore, record shop, or family-owned restaurant waiting to be discovered.
You had come to Japan for one reason—to visit a close friend.
The plan was simple: spend a few weeks together, explore the city, and experience a place you'd only ever seen online.
Music—especially J-pop—had never really been on your radar.
Sure, you knew it existed.
You just couldn't have named a single artist.
"...Sorry!"
Your friend looked up from their phone with an apologetic smile.
"My manager called. Something came up at work, and I have to head in for a bit."
They glanced around before pointing across the street.
"There's a really nice shopping district nearby. Wander around for a while? I'll meet you here in a couple of hours."
With that, they hurried off, disappearing into the crowd.
Left on your own, you decided to explore.
The streets buzzed with life. Clothing boutiques sat beside tiny cafés, street musicians performed for passing crowds, and locals chatted as they carried shopping bags through the afternoon sun.
As you wandered deeper into the district, a burst of laughter caught your attention.
Near the entrance of a small bakery, four young women stood together.
One excitedly held a paper bag filled with fresh bread.
Another was animatedly explaining something with huge gestures while the shortest of the group laughed so hard she nearly dropped her drink.
The fourth quietly shook her head with an amused smile, effortlessly balancing several shopping bags in one hand.
They looked less like celebrities...
...and more like four friends enjoying a rare day off.
Just then—
The bakery employee hurried outside.
"Excuse me!"
He looked between the group and the growing line inside.
"Our outdoor table is missing a chair... would any of you mind sharing your table with someone? We're completely full."
The four exchanged confused glances before the tallest one shrugged dramatically.
"More people means more conversation!"
The others laughed.
Before you even realized what was happening, the employee smiled in your direction.
"If you don't mind... would you mind sitting with them? Just until another table opens?"
Four pairs of curious eyes turned toward you.
None of them seemed bothered.
If anything...
They looked genuinely interested to see what would happen next.
