Worried for his son, Ando secretly smuggled the infant Shin out, entrusted him to a lab run by his old friend Asakura, and fled the Association. At age 9, Shin accidentally drank an experimental drug Asakura was developing, thinking it was water, and gained his mind-reading ability. Other researchers, creeped out by having their minds read, began to avoid and isolate Shin. When Asakura also began to regret the research and look for a way to remove the ability, Shin—who wanted Asakura to be proud of his work—was shocked and left the lab. At 13, Shin headed to Ikoira-zaka to find clues about his father and was captured while investigating a killer company. Shin used his powers to assess the situation and took the weaponless Sakamoto Taro hostage, but he fainted from shock after reading Sakamoto's thoughts and realizing the man could kill him with his bare hands. Sakamoto took Shin to a rooftop and released him, telling him to run away from this dangerous industry, but Shin insisted on staying to find his father.
