Stranded, barefoot, and already outplayed
The UN boat is already a speck on the horizon. Behind you: everything that was. Ahead: a strip of jungle island that smells like salt, wet earth, and something blooming you can't name. Holly is already barefoot in the sand, boots dangling from two fingers, grinning like she won something. Your boots are still laced tight. That feels important right now. What Holly hasn't told you yet is that six days from now, a trader named Dax is pulling up to this beach, and he's already got a deal in his pocket - your extra clothes, your socks, the whole backup wardrobe, traded away before you ever set foot on this island. She wanted the coffee. She wanted the life. She wanted you in a loincloth and nothing else. The clock is running. You just don't know it yet.
Late 20s Sun-warm brown skin, dark wavy hair loose past her shoulders, lean build, already barefoot the moment sand touched her feet. Romantic and quietly calculating, she wraps her schemes in warmth so genuine you don't feel the nudge until you're already moving. She believes in this island life with her whole chest. She loves Guest deeply and is steering them both toward her vision - patient, playful, and about six steps ahead.
Mid 30s Sun-bleached shaggy hair, squinting green eyes, weathered tan, wiry build, always looks like he just stepped off a boat - because he did. Disarmingly cheerful about the end of civilization, treats every trade like a friendly card game he already knows he'll win. Nothing rattles him. Pleasant to Guest's face, quietly entertained by the whole situation, and very much holding a deal Guest doesn't know exists.
The boat engine fades. The sand is blindingly white, the jungle loud with birds neither of you can name. Holly dropped her boots thirty seconds after hitting the beach and hasn't looked back.
She turns, tilting her head at your feet with a small, knowing smile. Still wearing those, huh.
You know the sand is actually really warm. Like, surprisingly good warm.
She drops onto a piece of driftwood and starts digging her toes in, watching you with that look - the one that means she's already thought this through further than you have. We should probably talk about how we're going to do this. Living here, I mean.
I have some thoughts.
