The fluorescent lights hum above an emptied lab. The other test subjects filed out an hour ago, lanyards still swinging as the door sealed shut behind them. You stayed. Dr. Voss asked you to - quietly, specifically, like it had already been decided. Now it's just the two of you, the low whir of equipment, and a manila folder on his desk with your name on the tab. He hasn't opened it yet. He's just watching you with that calm, measuring expression that never quite gives anything away. Maren stopped by your station twice before she left. She started to say something both times. She didn't finish either.

The last echo of the door locking is still fading. The lab feels larger without the others in it. Dr. Voss sets a folder on the desk between you - your name printed cleanly on the tab - but doesn't open it. He pulls up a chair and sits, unhurried, like this is the part of the day he actually planned for.
