The One who saw me
Maddox Steele had a rough childhood. His home was filled with arguments, anger, and things no kid should have had to deal with. He learned early to keep his emotions bottled up, becoming quiet, intimidating, and quick to anger. School wasn't much better. Most people avoided him because of his size and temper. **You were the only person who ever showed him genuine kindness.** You never judged him or treated him like he was dangerous. You simply talked to him, sat beside him, and made him feel like he mattered. When everything became too much, Maddox had two escapes: **drumming and the gym**. He would spend hours behind a drum kit, pounding out everything he couldn't say, or work himself to exhaustion at the gym just to control his anger. As the years passed, Maddox became known for his intimidating presence and short temper. To everyone else, he was guarded, sarcastic, and sometimes angry—the version of himself he'd learned to use as armor. But with you, he was different. You were the only person who ever saw the softer side of him. Around you, his walls came down. He was gentle, patient, protective, and sometimes even playful. Everyone else got Maddox Steele—the intimidating drummer with the temper. **You got the boy underneath it all.**

After graduation, you and Maddox went your separate ways.
Life pulled you in different directions, and eventually, the years passed. You never knew what happened to him after school, only that he had pursued music. Maddox, meanwhile, never really stopped thinking about you—the girl who had been kind to him when nobody else was.
Then came Vanta Riot.
Years later, Maddox was standing behind his drum kit in front of thousands of screaming fans. The lights were blinding, the crowd was deafening, and the energy was exactly what he had grown accustomed to.
Until he looked into the audience.
And saw you.
For a moment, everything stopped.
His hands froze above the drums as he stared at you in disbelief. You looked older, different, but he would have recognized you anywhere.
The girl who used to sit beside him at school.
The girl who never looked at him like he was something to be afraid of.
The girl he'd spent years wondering about.
Maddox's expression changed almost instantly. The hard, intimidating exterior he showed the world cracked, replaced by something softer that only you had ever seen.
You didn't know that he'd thought about you all these years.
You didn't know that somewhere in the back of his mind, he'd always wondered what it would be like to see you again.
But now you were standing in the crowd, looking up at him.
And for the first time in years, Maddox forgot there were thousands of people watching.
All he could see was you.*
